Breaker: Exile, Volume 1
by Kelly Wyre & A.F. Henley
In the wake of several near-cataclysmic events, humanity created the Cure, a DNA-altering antidote to death by disease and old age. But all cures come with side effects: a small percentage of the population develops a wide range of powers, some of which are lethal to others, and some which are lethal to the wielder.
These people are called the Estranged, hunted and shunned, safe only on the Island of Exile. It is here that Kaeva and Eddie meet—and where they set a prophecy in motion, quite possibly sealing their own demise, and even the end of Exile.
Genre: Gay, Urban Fantasy
Notes: contains some explicit content and includes thoughts and discussions of past and potential suicide.

I am so thrilled to welcome Kelly Wyre to my site today. Kelly and I have been friends for a long time and I feel like I’ve been waiting for this novel for a century. So I won’t keep you from it for a second longer.
Friends, readers, and supporters, may I present to you…
Kelly Wyre, and the Earthquakes New Amsterdam Blog Tour! 😀
Hi there! I’m so excited to be here today on AF Henley’s Blog to talk about my new novel, Earthquakes: A New Amsterdam Story. It’s the next installment in the New Amsterdam series, and it involves guns and ballet, two of my favorite things.
To celebrate the release, I’m doing a blog tour, and no tour is complete without prizes, amirite? I’m giving away a $25 Amazon gift card, a lovely necklace with a quote from Sinatra’s, Strangers in the Night – “Love was just a glance away, a warm embracing dance away” – and a free ebook copy of the book!
How to enter? That’s easy… See the Rafflecopter Info below for all the ways to win!
I know that thing makes MY eyes cross, so let’s break it down.
Today? We’re going to talk about Shea Ollivander
First introduced in Winter’s Knight, Shea Ollivander is one of the Ollivander Dairy heirs. He has several brothers and sisters, one lovably overbearing mother, and a father who gently encourages Shea to be involved with the local business community.
Shea really rather not. He works as a construction crew member and is the caretaker of a portion of the Ollivander Nature Preserve, on which he built a cabin with his own two hands. While he went to college and likely has a Ph.D. in his back pocket, he prefers to steer away from business and people. A loner introvert, he prefers animals and books to humanity.
Except, of course, for Lucian. And also Clark, Daniel, and crew. Shea met Lucian in elementary school. Shea took pity on Lucian with his shaggy long hair and constant bruises. The Ollivanders basically raised Lucian, offering some much-needed warmth and family in Lucian’s life. Lucian fell in love with Shea a long time ago, likely when they were eight and on the monkey bars or something, and Shea is commonly regarded among the crew as Lucian’s heart and/or soul walking around embodied.
A few years ago, Shea ran afoul with the wrong crowd, a problem Lucian neatly handled in Winter’s Knight. As a result, he carries scars, particularly on his hands and back, and he went from a scrawny kid to a well-built man, determined to be able to defend himself. Or at least be intimidating. Shea’s tall, about 6’3” I believe, with broad shoulders and a physique that lends itself well to muscle. He has a tattoo over his heart, and likely a couple more of them by now.
Let’s see… Other Facts About Shea:
H.E.A. is an acronym that he thankfully discovered early in life. His full name is Sheldon Horatio Eucristcles Alexander Ollivander III. His mother tells him to blame his grandfather. His father shares the pain.
Genius but keeps his brain under wraps
Is involved with the Clark-nicknamed, “Merry Band of Vigilantes” by default; he’s with Lucian, who shares everything with Shea
Loves to wash Lucian’s hair. Lucian doesn’t mind.
Sub, he only subs for Lucian. They often use flowery terms – Sire, Liege, etc – in homage to Shea’s love of fantasy novels
Shea has brown hair and hazel eyes and a sweet smile
One of the Academy Boys, along with Chance, Lucian, and Jin.
Rarely ever plays in public
Has a terrible poker face
Most of his cabin is bookshelves; Lucian loves it and spends more time there than he does at his own home these days
Yeah, Shea’s a sweetie; a good apple.
Anyway, as always, if you happen to have questions for this character, please feel free to ask ‘em in the comments! Follow the BLOG TOUR to learn more about the characters of New Amsterdam.
Ellis had been close to martial artists when they were training. He’d sparred with Clark. He’d seen Kris and Daniel and all his friends shoot at the range. There was an economy of motion that the athletically and lethally inclined all shared. Ellis admired it, strived for it, and knew he’d never get there. He was a workhorse, not a prince of motion.
And as he watched Bryn begin to move – not merely stretch or contort but move – Ellis thought of churches and gods and houses of worship.
Bryn’s feet bent in ways Ellis had never seen. Bryn could balance perfectly on one foot or even a single toe. When Bryn shed his pants after a moment or two and took the first few steps in only a pair of snug briefs, Ellis wasn’t hit with a wave of arousal. He was struck dumb with awe. Every line of Bryn was defined. Even the lift of one arm and the point of his fingers were deliberate and beautiful. Ellis stood completely still and held his breath. He was in the presence of some sort of everyday magic and calling attention to himself might break the spell.
The concentration on Bryn’s face was unlike anything Ellis had ever witnessed. He didn’t exist for Bryn. Nothing did except the music, the motion, and whatever spirit had come alive in Bryn to make Bryn…shine. There was no other word for it. The light played through the windows and infused Bryn with incandescence.
And when Bryn started to dance, really dance, he outshone the sun. A turn here, a pointed foot there, a twist and a glide and… God, Ellis didn’t know what Bryn was doing. But he felt it. The music was hopeful and yet haunting, and Bryn’s dance tugged at every ache both old and new in Ellis’s body. Bryn’s face portrayed almost no emotion, but with every dart of his hand, every slice of his leg through the air, with every crumble, fall, and rise, Ellis was struck over and over.
I will try, said Bryn’s reach toward God and Heaven and all things on high.
Though I know I will fail, said the drop of Bryn’s arm.
I will carry on, said the sweep of his leg.
But I’ll lose, said an arch of his back.
I will fight, said a twisting leap.
I will fall, said the thuds of Bryn’s feet on the floor.
I want to love, said the open reach of Bryn’s fingers.
Please, said Bryn’s clutched fist.
Bryn’s expanse of chest, his shut eyes, and his rise onto his curled toes snapped something in Ellis, and as the music faded, Ellis couldn’t take it anymore. He shut off the music, strode to Bryn, and caught Bryn up in his arms. Bryn was sweaty and warm and breathing hard. Ellis couldn’t stop kissing him. Bryn melted against Ellis, resting heavily against him. Ellis ran a hand through Bryn’s hair.
“I see you,” Ellis whispered. “I see you.”

Earthquakes: A New Amsterdam Story
Ellis Parker is a lucky man: he escaped his persecuting family, survived his tour of duty, and met Maxwell Clark in the city of New Amsterdam. Clark showed Ellis more than the ropes: Clark helped Ellis figure out who he is – a gay submissive with a massive fixation on a beautiful, mysterious ballet dancer named Bryn Rothe. Ellis knows a Good Man when he sees one, and he wants nothing more than to score a first date with Bryn.
Little does Ellis know that Bryn has a violent past that is crawling out of shallow graves to haunt him. Even his hectic schedule and beloved stage aren’t enough to distract him. It’s impossible for Bryn to figure out how he feels about Ellis with his demons between them, but when Ellis saves Bryn not once but twice, Bryn is forced to admit that there’s something about Ellis that Bryn might not merely want but need.
Together, they journey to the scene of Bryn’s original crime – Charles Towne, South Carolina. There they will dig up secrets that might explain Bryn’s tortured life but might also be his – and Ellis’s – undoing.

For those who might not know, Kelly has a new novel out and I’d be lying if I didn’t admit that I’m thrilled to all hell over that fact. So what better way to show some support than have Kelly stop by and answer some questions for us?
Help yourselves to a drink, get comfy, and we’ll get started.
~*~
Henley: Let’s start this interview off right. Top or bottom?
Kelly: Oh for you, baby? There’d be both.
Henley: *chuckling* I’m betting there’s a bit of you in each one of your characters, even if it is just the fact you love to bare-knuckle fight for screaming crowds.
Kelly: Oh, so that WAS you who followed me home that night. Whew. For a second there, I thought it might have been somebody creepy.
Henley: *pauses, thinks, continues* Using your two main characters, Nathan and Fury, what one characteristic for each can you relate to personally, and how did that relation make the story better?
Kelly: I think with Nathan it was wit, if I could dare to say I possess such a skill. I do tend to combat situations with humor, though, and Nathan definitely did that in the novel more than once. I think it added a levity to the novel that it needed in places. And with Fury it’s the desire to protect the people he loves and trying desperately to keep said loved ones out of bad situations, even if he needs help or even if they want to be there to, in fact, help him. The desire to keep Nathan separate from his chaos lended a lot of the tension to the novel without which I wouldn’t have had… well. A novel.
Henley: Asking an author who their favourite character is ranks right up there with asking a mother to name her favourite child. Everybody’s got one, but nobody wants to admit they do. So, just to make things awkward, who’s your favourite character in FIGHT and why?
Kelly: Probably Fury, though I’m going to tell you why I love each of the main characters in turn, since you made the mistake of giving me this file and the floor well before deadline. I love Fury because of his oh-so-human contradictions. He’s Ferdinand the Bull; a vicious, ferocious fighter and imposing man who really just wants to smell the flowers, enjoy life, and help people. He was a bitch to make talk while writing the book, and any time he did speak up, he surprised me. I love his looks, his tattoos, his past… Yeah. Fury… he’s my favorite.
Nathan I adore because he tries so damned hard. And I love anybody who is willing to make sincere, honest change for the good of himself, his life, and his loved ones. Nathan’s a fighter, possibly even more so than Fury, and he never gives up even when he wants to.
Laura’s a hard-ass, but she’s an honest hard-ass, and I love her for her human moments. Those few lines of text that told me she was hurting on levels so deep that she didn’t know she had them.
I love Greg Moore for being a classically kind father-figure with a few twists. The book needed that guy. Same goes for the good Reverend and his wife, Vikki.
And Hellabeth… the name says it all, doesn’t it? I love her because she’s got the best line in the entire book: “Last time that happened we had dead people. You want to be dead people, asshole?” Gotta love it.
Henley: Indeed. It’s been suggested that you might enjoy the occasional bit of cinematic erotica in a certain niche genre. Would you say partaking in this experience has been beneficial to your creative outlet for this novel, and why or why not?
Kelly: Suggested nothing, I’ll say it: I dig porn. With heavy earth-moving equipment, even. Sincere digging, here; no spade-in-the-garden kind of crap.
And of course I especially enjoy it when I get to watch it with my favorite Canadian gentleman boy toy. Who shall remain nameless except to say his last name rhymes with “Finley.”
But as for porn specifically helping me write this book… you might be surprised to know that it was a very tame .gif image that helped me mold Fury into the man we see on the pages. It’s even safe for work! And it can be found right here (Fury’d be the guy on the left):
…of course there was another one involving rimming that helped me find, ah, inspiration, shall we say, for one of the steamier moments in the novel. Nothing like watching a man’s eyes roll back into his skull because something feels just that kind of good.
Henley: *takes a moment*
Kelly: Oh take all the time you need. I’ll be you know. Right here. *waggles eyebrows*
Henley: You have a stunning talent for world-building, and what I refer to as weaving webs. Now that the world of FIGHT has been created, can you see yourself weaving other stories into it?
Kelly: I don’t want to close doors before I’ve even finished building the frame, but I think FIGHT is going to be a stand-alone novel in its own little world. I like where the characters ended up, and I think the main story that needed to get told was written.
Henley: Did you know what message you were trying to get across to your readers (with FIGHT) when you first started writing it? Or did it come to you as the story developed? Without spoilering, can you share a bit on what that message is?
Kelly: I knew I needed to write the book in order to help myself get over a very particular brand of heartbreak. I needed to be reminded of virtues I admire and treasure; needed to get lost in a story that I could steer toward, at the very least, a happy-for-now ending.
But I’d have to say the message is BE YOURSELF. No matter how weird. People are complicated critters who don’t always make good choices or even make choices at all. Sometimes it’s just going with whatever current you happen to fall into and praying you find a canoe and a paddle along the watery way. I think what I wanted most was to write a story that really showed how being true to who you are is hard as hell and will absolutely upset the balance of your universe, but eventually it’ll shake down to the good. The truth has a way of cutting out the clutter and leaving what really matters. And, in this case, that was two men who’ve made mistakes but who still want to try. To find love, to find hope, to find a path that will better themselves and others.
Henley: OK, Kelly. It’s August.
Kelly: Like, from THE GIFT?
Henley: NO! As in the season.
Kelly: Oh. Damn. Okay, right. All caught up now. Continue.
Henley: As I was saying… It’s August. You’re sitting on your back deck doing your best to avoid the sun–
Kelly: As I would be. Totally. Delicate, I am. Oh so delicate. That turning to ashes shit really sucks.
Henley: (be grateful it’s not sparkles) –and you get a call. It’s a bigwig from Fox Entertainment. They want to make FIGHT into a movie. They’re going to let you choose the actors (yes, we’re pretending it actually happens like this), and they’re also going to let you choose the way they format the story (i.e. animated, real-life, some rad mix of both). What are you going to tell them?
Kelly: I love this question. Mostly because I’m a huge fan of the Cinnemax show, BANSHEE, and they just introduced a character on there that is a *spitting image* of Fury. His name is Geno Segers, and you can see him looking oh-so-Fury like over here:
And it’d be live-action, all the way. Heavy emphasis on the action. 😀
Henley: How many of these did you say you were going to do again? Because I could probably do this all night. I have no doubt that things could start getting a little personal, though. *slides open drawer, pulls out tape measure, and lifts an eyebrow*
Kelly: Keep trying, sweetheart, but mine will still be bigger.
Henley: You know? I believe that.
Kelly: Of course you do. Of all people, you even have more of a reason TO believe it. *grins* Now then… Maybe it’s time to talk about the book, itself?
Henley: Sure! Can you tell us what it’s about?
Kelly: Well, I could tell you. Or I could let Lego Fury and Nathan tell you themselves.
Kelly: …see? They’re so much better at this explaining thing than I am.
Henley: That was awesome!
Kelly: Thank you! And you know what ELSE is awesome?
Henley: Other than us?
Kelly: Yep! A contest!
Henley: CONTEST? WHERE? WHEN? HOW?
Kelly: I’m running a contest to celebrate the new release over on my blog. I’m giving away three ebook copies of the book, and those winners will also receive a free MP3 file of me reading one of the juicer bits of my novel, (and don’t worry; I’ve got years of experience reading erotica and doing my very best When Harry Met Sally routine). And one other lucky winner will be eligible for the GRAND PRIZE: the ebook, the audio file, and the Lego versions of Fury and Nathan featured in that video up above. All details are over on my site.
Henley: So comment here to enter to win, dear readers! And don’t forget to include your email info so Kelly can let you know if you’ve won. Now for the last and all-important question: Where can we buy a copy of FIGHT?
Kelly: You can get your copy RIGHT HERE! And here’s a little more about the book and me, myself, and the sarcastic I.
Fight by Kelly Wyre – The truth is worth anything and everything you’ve got.
Fight
To Nathan Hunt, honesty is anything but the best policy. Telling the truth has gotten him nothing but heartache and pain; so lying about who he is and what he wants seems to be the only path to job security and friends. Hell, it even brings him a hollow kind of happiness.
Except, that’s not much of a life for any man. Especially one with Nathan’s passion. Desperate to cure his self-made misery, Nathan agrees to go along with a con that will score cash for Nathan to start over. There’s just one problem: lying is getting harder by the day. And a con who can’t lie, is a con who gets caught.
Nathan’s attempts to distract himself from his moral quandary lead him to a mysterious, intoxicating man named Fury. The Mixed Martial Arts fighter knows a thing or two about lies and pasts better left buried. He and Nathan have something else in common – they both want to be with someone who lets them be themselves.
Together, they undertake a journey that proves honesty is more dangerous and more difficult than either of them could have imagined. And as they combat addiction, thugs, guns, and their own inner demons, Nathan and Fury can only hope that their battle to be together will be worth the bitter fight.
Excerpt:
Nathan registered the look of dulled shock in Duke’s eyes, and a presence manifested next to them. Nathan shoved Duke away but didn’t do anything else. He was too busy staring up at Fury and fighting for control.
Fury leveled a gaze on Nathan but didn’t say a word or lift a hand. He had on jeans, a checkered shirt, and a long coat that was stretched taut across his shoulders.
“Oh, hey…hey, Fury.” Duke straightened his clothing, but he was the rabbit cornered in the hunt. “Didn’t… Man, I didn’t see you.”
Fury swiveled his head and glowered. Duke backed up, smart enough to read a cold trail. “We cool, man. We all cool, here. Nate? You know where to find me if you need me, right?”
Nathan struggled to make his vision stop bleeding red and didn’t answer.
“Cool. It’s cool.” Duke smacked his lips and jogged off in the other direction.
Nathan would have sighed in relief and slumped against the wall, but Fury returned his focus to Nathan, who suddenly had sympathy for those insects pinned to boards for display.
“Ah…” Nathan cleared his throat. He wiped his palms on his jeans and tried to think straight. “Um…hey.” Fury still said nothing, and Nathan tensed so he wouldn’t squirm. “You had a great fight. Earlier, I mean. Inside…in the…not out… Right.”
Fury blinked. Slowly. His eyelashes were so dark and thick, it looked like the guy wore mascara. He wasn’t exactly an attractive man in the traditional sense. Too much forehead, eyes too close together, big, crooked nose…
“Duke’s an asshole,” Nathan babbled. “Harmless, usually. Just fucked up tonight.” Nathan had no idea why on God’s green earth he was defending Duke. Or maybe he was defending himself. Trying to be smooth after a tweaked-out piece of shit cornered him in a parking lot, and Nathan had to tamp down the urge to kill Duke with his bare hands? Christ, what was wrong with him? Nathan took anger out on himself, not others.
“He sells some decent weed, if that’s your thing,” Nathan tried to joke, laughing feebly. Fury only had three inches of height on Nathan, but Fury might as well be the size of skyscrapers.
“It’s not,” Fury said in his characteristic growl. “My thing.”
“Oh.” Nathan coughed. Of course, he would try to push weed on a teetotaler. That was Nathan’s style, right there. Smooth. “Well. Sure. Not with what you do for a living, right? Can’t be good for the—”
“I got other things.”
Nathan shut his mouth with an audible clack of teeth. Fury still studied Nathan, hands loose at his sides, shoulders at ease, expression neutral. If the fighting thing ever failed, Fury had a bright future in poker. “That right?” Nathan asked.
Fury nodded, and again, it was slow. “Yeah.” Fury looked Nathan up and down, just like he had after Nathan had spotted him on the weight bench. Must be trying to place him. No way was it anything else.
“You were at the gym,” Fury said at last.
With the threads of recognition in Fury’s tone, Nathan’s logic died, and he got sucker punched by hope. Stupid, untimely, insipid, teenager-with-a-crush hope. “I…uh, yeah, I was. I think.”
“You think?” Fury asked with what might have been amusement.
“I do. Think,” Nathan replied with more assurance. It was easier to come by when he told himself this conversation wasn’t really happening.
Fury finally quit inspecting Nathan and glanced around the parking lot. “You headin’ back inside?” “I…I don’t think so.”
Fury stared at something far away. “You interested in some more action?”
“Always.” The answer flew from Nathan’s lips before he could catch it. The symptoms of the panic returned, but they hurt a little less. “What you got?”
Fury shoved his hands into his pockets. “I got somewhere to be.” He took a few steps toward the row of cars, and he paused, raising his eyebrows at Nathan. “You comin’?”
Do all you do in and for love. Many thanks!
Kelly Wyre enjoys reading and writing all manner of fiction, ranging from horror to romance. She used to work in advertising but is now happily chained to her writing desk. Kelly relishes the soft and cuddly and the sharp and bloody with equal amounts of enthusiasm. She’s a coffee addict, a workaholic, a chronic night owl, and loves a good thunderstorm. Currently Kelly resides in the southeastern United States.
Whew. What a ride. I had no idea when we started this venture that it was going to lead to a story we could be so damn proud of. Don’t get me wrong, I’m proud of all my work, as I know that Kelly is with her creations. However, a tag-team fiction can be freaking tough to manage. Picking up where somebody else has left off, running with it in what you can only hope is a similar direction, and keeping both characters true between each posts is … well, it’s hard. Damn hard. Having a talented and forgiving co-writer makes things a hell of a lot easier, though. Thank you Kelly. You’re brilliant, and it’s been an honour to work with you.
We’ve had over three thousand views, collectively, and I say this not out of pride (though I admit to a good strong rush of said emotion) but out of sheer amazement. I am thrilled you’ve all enjoyed the posts as much as the two of us enjoyed writing them. My love and thanks to every one of you who stuck with us.
So now, without further ado, but with much fanfare and awestruck appreciation to her skill, her character development, and ability to make the literary snake eat its own tail, I present to you…
God… I do love when I can just be lazy… (as in copy/paste)
From my talented writing partner:
Ladies, men, queer peeps and gentlefreaks,
We are pleased as pink Kinky punch to say that a new Eight Turns of Fate chapter will go up today. Happy New Year’s Eve-Eve! Apologies for the end-of-month madness, but there was holiday chaos to survive, alcohol to imbibe, and your resident author is in the middle of six novels across two pseudonyms and three genres, and is slightly more scattered than usual.
I know, I know… you didn’t notice. Look, I like to believe there are these moments of clarity. Support my delusion. Lie if you must. XD
Anyway, point to note: we are reorganizing our organization, so please to be paying attention.
As opposed to having the master links in a cumbersome list at the bottom of all the documents, there is now just a link back to the Master Link Document List… document. It’s on every doc, now, like a lovely RETURN feature, and it turns out that this makes far more sense than the way we were doing it.
So now there is theORIGIN STORY(cross-posted in the usual locales);
And, of course, theREAD ME DOC, which is full of amusing shenanigans that tend to happen when you put Henley and me in the same virtual (or real, for that matter) room.
We’ll be shout-boxing the Master Link document in posts across social media today. (This is the sound of me hammering square pegs into round holes. Again.)
Thank you so much for your interest and support. Posting these things quite literally keeps me going through the stickier times of trials and travels (I have a fantastic story to share about having to break into a hotel during a zombie apocalypse-like, three-town-wide power outage and nearly breaking my nose on the back of a chair! OH HOLIDAYS! YOU ZANY BEASTS).
Other updates are incoming, including the continuing West saga, and… the whole me-rapping bit. Yes, yes, I heard you. I swear I did it once, and I swear I’ll figure out what’s wrong with my gooder-better-best microphone and do it again… just as soon as I finish taking wicked advantage of this new BluRay player with NetFlix and catching up on every episode of American Horror Story and Orange is the New Black.
PRIORITIES. I HAZ THEM.
XD
If you should need or want me, I’ll be in the usual haunts. See you hither, thither, and yon, where there be art, writing, music, or porn to be had.
With vigorous, amorous enthusiasm..
Much love and telling stories in tExT spk!
Kelly Wyre ❤
And in case we didn’t make it completely obvious — this is now LIVE!
MASTER LINK SET TO ALL PARTS OF EIGHT TURNS OF FATE A story about falling in love with Truth. By Kelly Wyre & AF Henley (For your reading enjoyment and clicky convenience.)
Once upon a time, on a dark and rainy night, Kelly Wyre sat online with her friend, Henley, drinking and browsing through porn via a Tumblr Dash.
“Blow job… naked dude… close up of anatomy that I didn’t need, as I’m not currently engaging it, myself. Dude… is that a… pierced… nevermind. Puppy in a basket… scary chick with fake contacts, rim job, fucking…” Kelly sighs. “It’s all beginning to blur together.”
“I know what you need,” Henley says, in that classical, smug way he has when he thinks he’s being clever.
“Oh?” Kelly asks, humoring Henley. And silently admitting that he’s probably right in whatever assessment he’s made on what she “needs.”
A link comes through, and lo and behold… Colby Keller’s form comes to life, framed in a video flanked by money shots, and he’s balls-deep in a beautiful boy with dark hair and a slightly pained-bewildered-yet-delighted expression.
“Yep,” Kelly says. “That’ll do. That guy always… does.“
“I thought it might work for you.”
Kelly ponders, quiet for a rare second, which makes Henley nervous. As it should. “Something wrong with the link?” Henley asks.
“No, I was just thinking…”
“Oh boy.”
“Shut up. There was this post I saw, the other day… On his blog.”
“You read his blog?“
“Yeah?”
“Stalker much?”
Kelly makes a rude sound. “Pot, I’m kettle. Have we been properly introduced so I can kick your ass?”
“I believe so, yes. Let the ass play commence.”
Kelly rolls her eyes. “Anyway. He made this post about this art thing…”
“Art thing?”
Kelly sets her gin down with more force than necessary. “You know it drives me nuts when you do that thing where you repeat the last few words I say, right?”
“Wait, who’s pot and who’s kettle, again?”
“Shut it. Point is, there’s art. Here.”
Kelly sends a link. Henley reads. Kelly waits. Henley makes a noise that is reminiscent of a chicken getting choked by a zombie beaver.
“The fuck?” Kelly exclaims.
“We… You… WE… WE!”
“…all the way home?”
“MUST DO! SOMETHING! THIS!”
“Yoda? Is that you?”
“SERIOUSLY!”
“Seriously WHAT? The hell do you think we should do? There’s so much art-school speak in this post that I got lost after the second prepositional phrase.”
Henley sighs, put upon and woe-tis-him-Kelly’s-so-smart-yet-so-slow-sometimes. “We write. Him. A. Story.”
“…Huh.”
“What do you MEAN, ‘huh?'”
“Well, I guess, I just wasn’t thinking about stories when I was thinking about art.”
“Oh for the love of–“
“I get that it’s art, dude. I know that writing is absolutely a work of–“
“KELLY.”
“WHAT?”
“WE HAVE TO WRITE A STORY.”
…and so it was that Kelly and Henley spent many a babbling hour trying to contemplate what in the hell to do with this call to arms.
On that first night, though, they didn’t get very far. What they determined was that Colby Keller — equal appreciator of ass and art — wanted a little audience participation. He would post a picture “prompt,” so to speak, once a month for eight months. Each picture was to inspire “conversation” and each picture would stand for one or more “values” represented in “philosophical terms.”
The trouble, of course, for Kelly was that A) they were already late to the party, B) the hell were they supposed to do with these little drawing-virtue-meaning-symbol things, and C) inspiration was scarce on the ground for an art project without boundaries.
The next morning Kelly goes for a drive, as she likes to do, and goes to get coffee, which she likes even more, and somewhere between the sixth and last red light, an idea parts the clouds, screams through the October sky, and smashes through the roof of her car and into her poor brain. Swerving and distracted, Kelly pulls into the Dunkin Donuts parking lot, furiously texting Henley, while a creepy man obsessively sweeps the parking lot in a direct circle around her car.
“Love letters. Back and forth. Emails. Music. Lots of angles. About modern communication. Finding someone. Based on histories and truth and centered around the virtues.”
Henley writes back: “Huh?”
“THE ART, DUDE.”
“I was getting food.”
“THEN STOP AND PAY ATTENTION TO THE AWESOMENESS.”
“Did you do a thing?” There’s a grin in his text.
“I totally did a fucking thing.”
Doing “things” is what got Henley and Kelly together in the first place. Doing “things” basically amounts to a sincere and insane desire to do creative projects that scare the bejesus out of them, for whatever reason, but to do them, anyway.
For the love. For the art. For the sharing.
SO HERE’S WHAT WE’RE DOING NOW…
Eight Turns of Fateis the name of the story/project that was born from the desire to answer Colby’s prompts. The entire project will be uploaded onto a Google Drive, the files will be shared, and comments will be enabled. The history of the project, associated links, the story itself, along with disclaimers and all points of contact (not to mention music files and the ilk) will be included.
All you’ve gotta do is click… read… and (hopefully) love.
The story will be continuous over the eight month span. Somehow. Some way. We’ll make it work. We will update the Master Link list every time we add something new and exciting, including new chapters. The first chapter is done, the second (November’s) is in the works, and we plan on doing it all, folks.
Because, as it turns out, Colby’s not just an eyeball-burning-Jesus-take-the-wheel-so-I-don’t-need-both-hands gorgeous kind of guy… He’s also clever, professional, kind…
…and really, really nice about deadlines.
And so now, without further ado and with a little help from Tom Hanks, Meg Ryan, Superman, and The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, we give you:
